Identity rebranding for Frontiers for Young Minds, an award-winning, non-profit, open-access scientific journal for kids.
This project showcases the comprehensive rebranding and new design system for Frontiers for Young Minds (FYM). The rebranding included the creation of templates, stationery, animations, presentations, conference assets, social media posts, merchandise, and print materials to support events.
Year: 2023

Client: Frontiers for Young Minds

Role: Graphic designer, Illustrator, Animator
Brief and rebranding process
The initial step involved analyzing the existing illustrations created in 2013. The main issue identified was that these illustrations appeared too cartoonish for the scientific field and required an update to align better with FYM's educational mission.

After defining the key visuals provided by the illustration agency, I began the rebranding process by compiling a comprehensive list of assets used by the journal team. This list included business cards, ebook templates, forms, brochures, certificates, leaflets, social media posts, and presentations.

Templates and Presentations

A critical component of the rebranding effort was developing templates that the internal team could easily use. These templates were designed in Figma and Illustrator and later adapted to PowerPoint to ensure accessibility and ease of use for both the science and communication teams. Standard presentations for daily use were also created, allowing for simple text edits, along with certificates that could be easily customized with specific details such as names. All these assets were organized in our online library for easy access by the team.
Illustration Library
Since 2013, FYM has expanded its reach by offering its journal in multiple languages, including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Hebrew, and Mandarin Chinese.

This multicultural growth needed to be reflected in the illustration system as well. I continued developing the design system, incorporating more diversity among the main characters and adding new elements such as patterns and backgrounds. The main purpose of these assets was to serve as a component library within Figma, creating a more dynamic workflow adaptable to various purposes
Events
One of my roles was to provide support during conferences and events. This involved creating both printed and digital assets, including backdrops, brochures, stickers, tote bags, animations for immersive rooms, screen animations, and social media promotional templates.

I also managed the printing process, working directly with our printing agency. This involved organizing deliveries and schedules, providing logistical information, and ensuring that special file requirements were met.

Merch
The rebranding initiative included developing customized merchandise for events and conferences. The standard promotional kit featured stickers, tote bags, custom-made backdrops, and brochures with infographics narrating FYM's mission. Additionally, custom merchandise was created for FYM's translation sections in Arabic, Chinese, and Hebrew.
